History

On February 19, 1955 a TWA plane bound for Santa Fe Crashed in the Sandia Mountains. The following day several members of the New Mexico Mountain Club, along with other volunteers assisted the New Mexico State Police in the recovery effort. From this core group, the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council was eventually found. The team filled a need for an organized SAR capability in the Albuquerque Area. Formal incorporation of the team as a non-profit organization occurred on February 16, 1959, and the AMRC was elected membership into the MRA on May 13, 1966. All told, the AMRC including its founding group, has been providing SAR services to the community continuously for over 60 years.
